Contemporary Arts Museum : Dawoud Bey – Class Pictures

Dawoud Bey wanted to capture the essence of children through photographs, and what better way to do that than to go around the country taking pictures of random students whose family incomes range from poverty all the way to rich. Ask each student to write up a small message that encapsulates who they are as a person, and compile the results of such a study into one museum gallery where no income levels or school names are listed. Once done, you have Dawoud Bey’s exhibition, “Dawoud Bey: Class Pictures” which is now on display at The Contemporary art gallery in downtown Baltimore. It offers a classic showing of portraiture, and an unbiased look into the minds of America’s youth while accurately depicting the diversity of our nation and the coming diversity in our futures. The premise of our “Color my World” theme was to showcase the diversity of our country. Irene E. Hoffman, Executive Director of The Contemporary, highlights in her talk with Artison that America’s youth is not represented in classical or contemporary art, and that is just one of the many great things she had to say about this exhibition. Check out the video of our conversation, and be sure to visit The Contemporary to get your own personal look into the eyes of these students. Also read the stories written to describe their feelings during this transitional period in their lives.
